How do you teach resistance?

For a long time, scholars focused on the perpetrators in order to understand what drove them to participate in persecution and mass murder. Recently, more studies explored the experiences of the victims. However, the assumption still dominates that except in rare cases like ghetto uprisings and partisan actions Jews were led by the Nazis like sheep to the slaughter.

Yet, research proves that between 1933 and 1945 Jewish women and men defied the Nazis and their helpers in manifold ways; first in Nazi Germany proper, later in all annexed and occupied countries. Such evidence restores the agency of the persecuted and needs to be incorporated in our narrative of the events during the Holocaust.

While Jewish women and men of all ages, educations and professions performed countless acts of resistance, many young people were among them. Often socialized in Jewish youth organization, teenagers and adolescents engaged in individual and group resistance ranging from public protest and sabotage to organized armed attacks against the Nazis.

Join us as we explore new ways to look at teaching resistance during the Holocaust.
