Yes! From 2011-2022, we were known as the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center, or BHEC. We changed our name in 2022 to reflect our growing mission and statewide reach. Today, the AHEC is proud to serve educators, students, and communities in each of Alabama’s 67 counties. We are truly Alabama’s resource on Holocaust information, education, and testimony.
AHEC offers educational resources for teachers, student programs, public events, school field trips, and customized group tours. We provide professional development opportunities, host compelling exhibits, maintain an archive of over 10,000 Holocaust artifacts, and house a specialized library with more than 3,000 books. Our goal is to support Holocaust education and remembrance across all 67 counties in Alabama.
After World War II, over 170 Holocaust Survivors made their home in Alabama. Survivors and their children are our neighbors, family members, coworkers, and community members. We believe in uplifting their stories while promoting a general understanding of the Holocaust to preserve their testimonies and lives.
