Was chief rabbi in Aachen, Germany (1926-1938).
Before World War II he was a widely published poet, scholar, and lecturer. He performed the marriage ceremony of the parents of Anne Frank.
On November 9, 1938 (Kristallnacht), he saw his synagogue burned to the ground by the Nazis.
In the US, his chief pulpit was in Chicago, but he later served Temple Mishkan Israel in Selma, AL. Lived in Birmingham since his retirement in 1960.
