About the Event
In “Taking Action Together: The Power of Conversation with Daryl Davis,” you’ll hear how Davis has spent decades engaging in personal dialogue with KKK members, neo-Nazis, and others with hateful ideologies — and how more than 200 people have renounced extremism after speaking with him.
Through his example, you’ll learn:
-
How you can use conversation (not confrontation) to challenge prejudice and open minds, even in deeply divided spaces.
-
Why listening respectfully to those you disagree with can break down stereotypes and humanize the “other.”
-
How one question — “How can you hate me when you don’t even know me?” — can serve as a powerful entry point to understanding and transformation.
About the Speakers
Daryl Davis
Daryl Davis believes that every missed opportunity for dialogue is a missed opportunity for conflict-resolution. Davis is an American R&B musician, leader of The Daryl Davis Band, and has performed with musicians such as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tina Turner, and others.
For the past forty years, Daryl has been engaging in active dialogues with members of the KKK, neo-Nazis, and other hateful movements to better understand what would draw someone to these ideologies. As a result of their conversations with Daryl, over 200 people have renounced these hateful ideas and relinquished their Klan robes and other memorabilia over to him as a symbolic transition away from their dark past.
Through his experiences engaging with members of hate groups, Daryl Davis exemplifies the power of conversation to overcome divisions and foster understanding. His story serves as a powerful example of how individuals can challenge prejudice, break down barriers, and build meaningful connections across lines of difference.
