I tell the story of my Dad growing up in Alsace part of France. He leaves his family to come to Birmingham, AL to stay with relatives at the age of 19. After D-Day he was drafted to the US Army and returned to France to fight in the war. Through the many acts of kindness he survived, his family survived and he was able to return to America and marry Evelyn Sellers and raise 4 children and happily married for 60 years.
There were so many people along the way during these years that helped my family survive these war years. I like to use the quote from Doug Cotler’s song:
“I am standing on the shoulders of the ones who came before me because years ago they crossed the sea and made a life that has come to me.”

Denise Lewis was born in Birmingham, Alabama and attended Ramsay High School. She then went on to the University of Alabama, where she majored in Elementary Education. Denise taught school for several years and then became a substitute teacher and private tutor. Over the years, she and her family have lived in Tuscaloosa, Mobile, Jasper, Selma, Chicago, Augusta (Georgia), and the Caribbean. In 1990, Denise and her family moved to Vestavia Hills, when her husband joined Anesthesia Services of Birmingham. In 2020, her husband retired, and they are enjoying their “life in the country” in Coosa County, Alabama. She has 3 children and 7 grandchildren. In her spare time, she loves playing tennis, bridge and mah jongg.
Denise shares the story of her family with her presentation of “L’Dor Va Dor” which means “Generation to Generation.” She has shared these stories with elementary school students through college age students, as well as with churches and civic organizations around the state.
Denise notes in her presentation how “small acts of kindness” will carry on for generations.
