In Montgomery, he prepared students for their bar mitzvah, teaching Hebrew at Agudath Israel. He was also a moyel and shochet (kosher butcher). He and his wife ran a small grocery where they sold kosher meats that he butchered.

He was referred locally as Reverend Merenstein
