Join us for Birmingham’s annual Yom HaShoah Commemoration. This year, we will honor the victims, survivors, and resisters of the Holocaust with the play, SURVIVORS. SURVIVORS was written by Deborah R. Layman and is based on the lives of six Birmingham Holocaust survivors: Martin Aaron, Aisic Hirsch, Riva Schuster Hirsch, Ilse Scheuer Nathan, Ruth Scheuer Siegler, and Max Steinmetz. Set in a contemporary high school classroom, the play explores the parallels between the past and the present, with the Holocaust stories serving as lessons about the consequences of hate. The six survivors depicted in the play, along with other survivors in Alabama, told their stories many times in schools, churches, libraries, and synagogues all over the state. Their mission was to influence young people to reject hate in all its forms, to stand up for people who are being victimized and marginalized by hate, and to embrace a mindset of kindness, decency, understanding, and acceptance. The play honors our local survivors and the lasting impact of their stories. SURVIVORS was commissioned by Keith Cromwell, Executive Director of Red Mountain Theatre (RMT), and was developed as part of RMT’s 2021 Human Rights New Works Festival.
A memorial candle lighting will follow the play.
