Named for the the German criminal code that banned sexual acts between men, the film Paragraph 175 uses survivor testimony to recount the persecution of homosexuals in the Third Reich. This award winning, 2000 documentary adds “to the growing body of invaluable cinematic literature documenting for posterity the hideous barbarity of Nazism” and serves as another, lesser known, perspective into the history of the Holocaust.

Following the film, Paragraph 175’s lead historian, Dr. Klaus Mueller, will join the audience via Zoom for a Q&A session. Dr. Klaus Mueller, based in Berlin, serves as the US Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Representative for Europe on the Museum’s core themes of Holocaust documentation and education, antisemitism today, and genocide prevention. Klaus has worked for the Museum in different capacities since 1992, including as a consultant on the Nazi persecution of homosexuals—a theme that he continued to work on independently as a filmmaker and historian with the documentary Paragraph 175 on gay survivors and But I was a Girl on Dutch resistance fighter Frieda Belinfante. He co-curated the Museum’s exhibition Anne Frank The Writer: An unfinished Story and developed the online exhibition Do You Remember When. Klaus serves on the United States delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) where he chaired IHRA’s Committee on Holocaust, Genocide and Crimes against Humanity in 2018. Previously he taught film and cultural history at the University of Amsterdam. Klaus holds a PhD in Sociology and a Master’s degree in German Literature and Philosophy.
