Volunteer
The AHEC is always looking to expand our team of passionate volunteers. The mission to preserve the history and lessons of the Holocaust is a big one–one that includes all abilities, ages, and skills. The AHEC is proud to offer volunteer opportunities to schools, community groups, and citizens across the state of Alabama. We have both long-term and short-term volunteer opportunities.

Internships
The AHEC is thrilled to work with undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates in our immersive internship program. From archival work and library studies, to in-depth historical research, to nonprofit management, K-12 education, and more, we offer a diverse range of interactive, career-launching internships.
All of our interns gain practical work experience, immersion in the events and lessons of the Holocaust, and the opportunity to network with the Birmingham nonprofit and museum community.
Availability is dependent on departmental needs. Depending on your educational institution, the AHEC does offer credit internships. All interested applicants, regardless of their area of study, are encouraged to apply.
Docent Program
Our docents are the heart of the AHEC’s day-to-day mission. Offering guided tours of our state-of-the-art facility, our docents welcome visitors through our doors. They share the history of the Holocaust, from the personal narratives of our Alabama Survivors to the major world events stamped across the pages of history. Empowering and engaging our visitors, our docents have the unique opportunity to meet the public where they are, passing on the lessons and legacy of the Holocaust.
Our docents complete a comprehensive six-month training program, working one-on-one with our staff. The AHEC Docent Program is funded in part by the Birmingham Jewish Foundation and the Susan Mott Foundation.
